Brussels (for a day)

6.30am taxi in the pouring rain • St Pancras • busy busy terminal • coffees, at last • take our seats • chat chat • sunny in Kent • tunnel! • the LJ breakfast buffet opens: fruit cups, pastries, soda bread, tapenade, smoked salmon, boiled eggs, salad & tomatoes, bucks fizz • nibble nibble • out the other side, super sunshine in France • more great sunshine in Belgium, get us off! • out of the station into the dodgy around-station area • walk walk • The Big Brussels Square • cobbled, gothic buildings, terrace coffee shops, flower hawkers • coffee. with some of those little continental biscuits on the side • gossip gossip • walk through town in the direction of one of the parks • photo 1fountains, flag stone pavements, Dinner In The Sky dangling above one of the squares • the park has big gravelly paths, shady, rustling trees and lots of fountains. there are groups of children and wandering office workers on their lunch breaks • sun sun sun • walk up street with all the main EU office buildings to the Parc du Cinquantenaire which is quieter and prettier • we’re all officially ready for A Drink • find a nice piazza • little glasses of beer, house white wine and bags of salty crisps • somehow the day has evaporated and we’re under the cosh to find a restaurant for an early dinner • leg it through Brussels: squares, main streets, back streets, residential, it’s a fast track of the city centre • end up back at the main square from this morning, the shadows have moved around and the long weekend crowds have arrived for their Friday evening • Le Cygne, sitting on the square, laxidasical service • there’s still more to chat about! we’ve been together for hours and not close to running out • to start: shared mixed salad & creamy mushrooms, for main: Marie – veg & mozarella stack, Catherine – lamb & dauphinoise, LJ – sea bream with spinach. desserts – chocolate heaven all round. crisp white wine throughout • we are now officially cutting it fine to make our train.. it’s a swift march across the square, tense working of the ticket machine, impatient waiting on the platform, nothing-to-do-but-ride-it on the metro, and then flip flop running through the Eurostar terminal • much laughter • seats, wine, looking at the photos • tunnel! • making friends with our neighbour in the fourth seat at the table. she’s very cool • into St P • up to the Booking Office for a couple of closing cocktails • great day, great sunshine, great girls xxx
