Lana del Rey

There’s been some good female talent kicking around lately: Paloma, Jessie (Ware), Ellie, Little Mix ;) and, the intriguing girl-with-history, Lana del Rey. She has a look, and sings, like she might wake up & say a few hail marys, then get straight onto the bloody marys, read & write some beatnik, cry a bit, and end up crawling out of a smoke swirling cavern hours or days or years later. Marvlus. I was looking forward to this.

everything else

The venue, Palaolimpico, is awesome (praise for that another time) photo 3 but it was definitely too big for her. Someone, somewhere should be getting a kicking for bad planning. But the set looked beautiful, really beautiful, palm trees, gilded columns, and a really relaxed looking band.
Lana wore white. And oh, we talked about it. Standard issue flowers in the hair, which complemented the Grecian set, but we talked about the dress. It was tennis looking. Which is hot. But it didn’t go, and throughout the performance, frankly it grated. I realise it’s only a dress, but it’s also only one girl on a stage so the dress matters yeah.

the music

Set list was great, new stuff, old stuff, covers, old stuff. And she can sing, she was wonderful live. Her voice really is the Bugsy Malone cocktail lounge that you want it to be, I was impressed. The Italians were impressed too, and she gave them a whole lotta love too – signing autographs and giving it the ‘I’ve always wanted to perform here’.
But let’s talk about the autographs, because the gig ended with her signing autographs in the pit for 20-25 minutes and then just leaving. It was obscure and abrupt, a big let down from the girl we got sucked into liking. She had us, y’know, Lana, I was in, I was even starting to like the dress, but nah, that was a bad ending.
