David McCandless, “Information is Beautiful”

Alright, so maybe this shouldn’t be classified ‘reading’…

McCandless decided to provide a service to society by visually presenting bits of stats, data & info. The book is brilliant. It totally achieves what it sets out to do which is make plain old numbers interesting and relevant.

A few years ago there was a brilliant article in The Economist about just how much data we’re surrounded by now; so much that new words are being invented to describe the quantity. And data is something that is discussed non-stop in business (we’ve got it, what do we do with it etc), and ‘infographics’ are being used more & more to communicate messages. So, McCandless is tapping into something popular here.

He’s done a great job, the book is pages and pages of colourful, playful presentations that you can easily assimilate. He covers all sorts: Big Issues (carbon emissions, causes of death), Internet stuff (most searched, viral successes), pop (winning team colours, Bollywood profits), tickly fun (life span of condiments, ‘virgin’ quality of students by subject), plus food, nature, health, physical, relationships. It’s compelling and a great conversation kicker.

Lay it on me... is this neat or nerd..??
