Support: Ironman UK, Team True Spirit

The UK Ironman triathlon will take place 31 July in Bolton, Lancashire. Around 1,500 athletes will be participating and places allow qualification for the awesome Hawaii 2011 Ironman. I’m writing about this because my best friend Catherine will be competing, but under really special circumstances.

Team True Spirit

Catherine is a rehab instructor at Headley Court, a Defence Medical Rehabilitation Unit. She works her rehab magic (and she does have magic fingers) on individuals who have suffered extreme injuries through military (navy, airforce and army) service.
This year there are ten teams, Team True Spirit, entering the UK Ironman from this Unit. Teams because they comprise relay competitors amongst the servicemen and relay support amongst the Unit staff.

A full Ironman is 2.4 miles (4KM+-) swim, 112 miles (180km+-) bike ride, 26.2 miles (42km+-) run. It’s hard. And this is no softly softly course. The swim is two laps of open water, open water in the North of England, i.e. wetsuits compulsory. The bike ride is 3 laps of a course that includes three major climbs. The run is a lollipop: one straight piece and then three laps. Personally I can’t stand lap racing but lots of people think it creates a better atmosphere by keeping competitors together which is a fair point.

Catherine is doing the swim and bike as support for one of the competitors. That’s around SEVEN HOURS of endurance sport to help another human being reach their goal.

It’s the first time that these relay teams, Team True Spirit, have entered and they’re focused on both completing the course and also raising funds for their selected charities: “Help for Heroes”, “Army Benevolent Fund” and “Blesma”.

Last year I completed a half Ironman (just halve all the distances above and add sunshine) so I have some understanding of what Catherine is doing and I am so incredibly impressed & proud of her. Catherine casually takes on immense challenges and just as casually nails them, she’s an absolute inspiration. And she’s not doing this for her own result, she’s doing it to assist someone else on the way to an amazing achievement.
Catherine has been training with the defence dudes for this event all year and, I think, is looking forward to it :) I will be there in spirit & by SMS, look forward to hearing all about the Team success and will share the news with you.
