Saturday Bike Ride

It’s been a while since I’ve gone on a nice cruise-y ride. Most recently all the bike rides have been pounding, get-the-ks-under-the-belt, many accompanied by Jamie funny enough. So it was nice to get kitted up, casual, no time pressure, and no worry about time, distance, destination pressure. In the end Fernando came too – it’s the first time we’ve been out together. And it was an awesome morning.

Manly to Palm Beach and back. Snaking the beaches on the way. Enjoying the few hills – take ‘em slow, who’s counting… Really enjoying the stretch from Avalon to Palm Beach. Just in the last few weeks you can tell that summer is coming; it won’t be long til bike riding in the middle of the day isn’t an option and it’s back to crack early mornings, but for now the wind is still cool and there’s enough cloud.

We lollipop-ed around Palm Beach then hung out for a bit, me with a Paradise Café coffee & fruit, Fernando with chocolate peanut slabs, or something.

Coming home the wind was against us so it was fractionally harder work. We took the Coronation Street left turn at Mona Vale to come the ‘back way’ and stopped in at Warriewood Beach just to take a look. It’s a secluded (ish) beach that stretches on further than you think it will and has both sandy beach breaks and some rocky / cliff breaks too, very pretty. Very pretty until you have to take the 45% gradient out of the car park. Fernando reckons “its bark is worse than its bite”, he can push me next time then.. :P

I took the stretch from Long Reef to Dee Why at full pelt. Jamie would be proud; there’s been no other way since he bullied me into the no-brakes policy. Got a lucky break through Dee Why with very few traffic lights and another good downhill into Brookvale.

Nice work. And very nice to not run – at all – afterwards. Back in the saddle as they say.
