mini triathlon

For a while I’d been planning to enter a triathlon and today was the day. It was up at North Head: swimming two laps of a 350m circuit in the harbour, 2.7 k run from the harbour up the hill to the bikes, 20 k bike ride (seven laps of a circuit), 5 k run around North Head. Kick off was at 6.30am. There were quite a few people and it was a friendly, nice crowd, not too competitive.

I was incredibly nervous – mostly terrified about the swim and crashing my bike. As I expected, the swim was terrifying, my first 100m I was all over the shop, barely breathing, but once I was separated from the pack I relaxed a bit and things started to fall into place. I turned rubbish again when I had to swim round the buoys because I had to keep looking up. Still, kept going and when I got a bit of rhythm I was going quite nicely. No escaping it though, I was the last person out of the water! Trainers on, first bit of running done, hopped on my bike and was then really happy. Just pounded around the course loving every second of it and really not caring if I was going better or worse than anyone, just happy to be on my bike. Last transition, trainers back on and headed out for the run. Wow, this was painful, I didn’t really know what my legs were doing and everything below my waist hurt! It was quite frustrating but then towards the end I started to feel better!

The first few people who asked me if I’d enjoyed it I gave a very grumpy ‘no’ to; I was all moody about the swim and feeling like a loser. After a few minutes though, I started to realise that I had enjoyed it and that if I just got used to the change overs that I would like it a lot more as well. Although I did think it was a lot of faff for relatively short distances. So, there you go first triathlon complete.
